Is it only February?! What a month!
So much has been going on since the last Month in Review, yet at the same time it’s been so concentrated I can barely remember what happened!
This is Gaian here, and I’m happy to be giving you the deets on this very warm and cold February of 2024.
O3DE has yet to kill us!
Pretty severe criticism but it’s a definite worry when one is undertaking an unclear risk. You never know when the killing barrier will rear its ugly head and you find your project dead in the water.
Instead, we’re trucking along and making steady progress along the way. No wall has been impenetrable and our prototypes are taking a much more coherent form.
I’m even spilling over into features I didn’t think I’d be prototyping yet. It’s all just working out smoothly to keep trying to realize old GS tools as script graph prototypes.
This is all very good news!
Awakened Guardian is on the board!
Yes! It’s a newsline as old as time but circumstances and opportunities have all dialed into Awakened Guardian being our target project!
I never would have thought I should have the ambition to aim for it, but mentors and invested figures think it’s a decently realized and compelling concept! I totally agree of course!
Taking on this project at this stage of my career, and with goals to grow for and through it, is looking to be the right time. And because of it, I’m getting so stoked to sink my teeth into the pure genome of our Guardian, and Awakened Guardian as a whole!
Just look at how cool this already is becoming on my regular 0 dollar budget and one month!
Growth, wait that‘s opportunistic talk! What’s the deal?!
Well if you happened to be keeping up with the latest vlogs I’ve been finding myself in a meta theme, which has been speaking to the times I find myself in.
This entire month has been a daily game jam, working hard and chugging along with fiery ambitions and delightment in learning.
I’ve been finding myself in a far more established place and reputation than I’d ever let myself believe.
And the over arching thing about all this is… I’m In It. Like real deal. I’m doing the Game Company dance!
Humble Beginnings in O3DE Community
Part of this has been the slow integration of the Genome Team into the O3DE community!
It’s been a struggling and a little embarrassing month as we’ve made our first commits and debugging efforts for O3D, but with every day we’ve been applying ourselves to it, we’ve been growing ever more familiar and experienced in the whole operation of the engine. From organization to functionality.
Additionally we’ve been getting to know the regular contributors and maintainers. It’s been really cool to connect and get to fimilliarize ourselves with everyones bits and contributions and knowledge with the vast engine.
Likewise, we’ve been becoming our own regulars. Our activity has been rallying new contributors to take part on the server and stick around, and we really hope that our part in supporting newcomers can alleviate the heavier lifting contributors to worry about the most complex problems. All very intresting stuff to be taking part in and shaping.
O3DE Intensives
As part of this community effort, I’ve taken to doing some hard and fast tutorials on getting kickstarted on the engine.
I hope to disseminate some decent enough information and fill some of the knowledge void happening with the engine and the greater outside world.
Maybe this can get people a little more confident in the engine, and eke out some good fixes for aspects of the engine through it.
Here’s the first one! Next one comes on Wednesday!
Genome is growing up!
Yes, I was being a little bit ambiguous in the vlog section of this months update… but. Genome is going to be making games!
In the last few months I’ve been working hard to position myself and Genome Studios to being a real contender for investment, and project success. Since then I’ve been growing my roots long and wide and have not lookied back.
We’re beginning to see investors, and other interested parties start giving us a look. We’re making a presence in the places we’ve chosen to show ourselves as a professional company. I’ve got a presentation and panel at an upcoming Student Dev Conference: Level Up. We’re still working with mentors well and onward through all this, and we’re seeing communities recognize Genome Studios and my efforts within.
No time like the present!
So yeah Holy Shit mobilization! I’m going to have to pitch, and plot, and sell, and design, and hire, and grow but I’m actually finding myself at the very first strides of the actual real game dev game! Out of the frying pan and into the fire!
While all this is chugging away, Jira is filling up! There’s plenty of game and tech and tools we have to make!
And in all this I’m just so abundantly clear. I want to dive right in with an enormous grin on my face. It’s not that this is going to be easy, I’m excited because it’s the hard and complicated stuff that makes real out of these dreams I’ve been holding for 2 decades.
That’s all folks!
A very big month for us, and the mark of many more!
Thanks as always for coming along! We are excited to bring more exciting news and great progress in our work in the coming months and beyond!
Here’s to a kind March for us all!
